Position Summary

Johnson County Community College (JCCC) seeks a part-time Lab Instructor in Fire Science to teach essential firefighting skills and prepare students for third-party state firefighter certifications in four core areas:

  • Hazmat Awareness

  • Hazmat Operations

  • Firefighter I (Fire I)

  • Firefighter II (Fire II)

This role includes hands-on instruction, partnership with peers, and the maintenance of firefighting equipment such as chainsaws, ladders, breathing apparatus, personal protective gear, and extrication tools. The goal is to ensure students receive high-quality, practical training aligned with state certification standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily skills training following state Job Performance Requirements (JPRs).

  • Oversee live fire preceptors and guide students through various certification scenarios (e.g., basement fire, kitchen fire, ventilation, RIT team).

  • Proctor the National Candidate Physical Ability Test — a pre-employment agility certification.

  • Organize and manage state certification test stations (approx. 30 items for 48 students over two days).

  • Collect, inspect, launder, and return 48 sets of protective gear after training sessions.

  • Ensure students demonstrate competency before signing off on skill sheets.

  • Administer course evaluations and gather student feedback.

  • Maintain inventory and ensure all fire training equipment is in optimal working condition.

Note: Duties, scheduling, and work location may be adjusted at any time based on departmental needs.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • IFSAC/Pro Board Certifications in:

    • Firefighter I (FFI)

    • Firefighter II (FFII)

    • Hazmat Operations or Wildland Firefighting

  • Wildland Firefighter Type 1 certification

  • Single Resource Boss (Engine, Crew, etc.)

Preferred Qualification:

  • Fire Instructor I certification
