Job Summary

The Department Chair provides strategic and academic leadership for assigned programs within Dallas College, overseeing faculty, curriculum, and operations across multiple campuses. This role ensures the academic integrity, quality, and effectiveness of programs, aligning with college-wide goals to promote student success and workforce readiness.

The Department Chair supervises faculty and staff, manages budgets, coordinates scheduling, supports accreditation, and fosters collaboration among academic and industry partners.


Key Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Develop, evaluate, and enhance both credit and non-credit programs.

  • Coordinate curriculum review, program assessments, and accreditation compliance.

  • Support new program initiatives that address community and workforce needs.

Faculty and Staff Leadership

  • Hire, onboard, and evaluate full-time and adjunct faculty.

  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

  • Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and student-centered departmental culture.

Academic Operations

  • Develop course schedules and manage program delivery formats.

  • Resolve student concerns, grade appeals, and program-related issues.

  • Oversee dual credit, P-TECH, and Early College partnerships when applicable.

Budget and Resource Management

  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets to ensure effective resource allocation.

  • Collaborate with institutional leadership to align financial and academic goals.

Collaboration and Outreach

  • Engage with advisory boards, industry partners, and higher education institutions to strengthen program quality and student outcomes.

  • Promote student achievement through innovative strategies and operational excellence.

Performance and Compliance

  • Track departmental progress, assess outcomes, and report on performance metrics.

  • Complete required professional development hours annually.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple programs and teams across diverse locations.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.

  • Skilled in data-driven decision-making, program assessment, and strategic planning.

  • Experience in conflict resolution, faculty supervision, and team development.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent, meeting Dallas College credentialing requirements for one of the department’s disciplines.

  • Minimum three (3) years of administrative experience in higher education.

  • College-level teaching experience required.

  • Experience in program development, assessment, and accreditation.

  • Ability to travel between campuses as needed.

  • Official transcripts required upon hire.
