Overview

Under the direction of the Truck Driving Instructors and Lead Instructional Assistants, this position provides hands-on training for students pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The role includes teaching driving and operational skills, maintaining records, preparing reports, and supporting Workforce Solutions and Continuing Education initiatives.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong instructional ability, professionalism, and a commitment to safety and student success.


Work Schedule

The schedule is flexible based on candidate availability. Current course sections include:

  1. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  2. Tuesdays and Thursdays: 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., and Saturdays: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Additional CDL classes for program students are offered at various times Monday through Friday.


Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate and supervise student driving in various conditions and environments.

  • Teach straight-line backing, depth perception, turning, docking, and parking techniques.

  • Instruct students on mirror use, pre-trip inspections, and coupling/uncoupling trailers.

  • Provide collision avoidance training and administer CDL examinations.

  • Conduct driving simulations and brake board activities.

  • Perform vehicle cleaning, light maintenance, and upkeep of training areas (e.g., line painting).

  • Participate in student recruitment and assessment efforts.

  • Maintain accurate student records and assist in program reporting.

  • Uphold safety standards and foster a professional, respectful learning environment.

  • Collaborate effectively with instructors, students, and external partners.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to operate all truck and trailer combinations used in the training program.

  • Strong organizational and instructional skills.

  • Ability to work with students individually and in groups.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Commitment to ethical behavior, quality standards, and safety compliance.

  • Cultural competence and ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.


Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience operating large trucks with 48' or 53' trailers (seven years preferred).

  • Completion of formal truck driving training preferred.

  • Prior teaching or training experience in the trucking industry preferred.

  • Experience with van, flatbed, tanker, and doubles preferred.

  • Certified CDL Examiner preferred.

  • Must hold and maintain a valid Class A CDL with air brake endorsement.

  • Must pass a DOT drug test and maintain an acceptable driving record.
