Job Summary

Under general supervision, the CDL Examiner (Third-Party Tester) is responsible for administering and evaluating Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) skills tests in strict compliance with federal and state DOT regulations. This position supports IRSC’s mission by ensuring fair and accurate assessments that promote workforce development and public safety.

Key duties include conducting pre-trip inspections, control skills tests, and road tests, as well as maintaining secure records and coordinating with instructional staff for scheduling and reporting.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct CDL skills tests (pre-trip inspection, basic control, and road test) for applicants as scheduled.

  • Administer tests according to Department and Examiners Manual procedures.

  • Record and submit test results (pass/fail) in the Department’s PWS and CSTIMS systems by the next business day.

  • Adhere to all anti-discrimination laws and provide reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities.

  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of all testing materials and equipment.

  • Comply with unannounced inspections to ensure adherence to testing standards.

  • Complete annual written certifications confirming compliance with DOT and IRSC policies.

  • Maintain an active Commercial Driver’s License and valid Third-Party Tester Certificate.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Valid and current Third-Party Tester Certificate issued by the State of Florida for applicable CDL test types.

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of CDL experience preferred.

  • Strong understanding of FMCSA and state CDL testing regulations.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow regulations precisely.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated integrity and commitment to impartial testing.

  • Experience using or ability to learn the Department’s PWS and CSTIMS systems.

  • Must successfully pass a biannual driver record review.


Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, reach, and lift items exceeding 50 pounds.

  • Manual dexterity for using office and testing equipment.

  • Work primarily outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, cold).

  • Extended periods of standing, walking, and monitoring candidates.

  • Frequent climbing in and out of commercial vehicles.

  • Must possess adequate vision, hearing, and reflexes for assessing driving performance and responding to emergencies.

  • Adherence to all IRSC safety standards and protocols is required.


Compensation and Application Details

  • Pay Range: Starting at $29.00 per hour.

  • Salary is determined based on education and experience.
