General Job Summary

The Adjunct CDL Instructor will provide in-truck instruction for the Professional Truck Driving Program, both on the training range and on the road. Responsibilities include delivering hands-on training, assessing student performance, and maintaining accurate progress reports.

This part-time position follows a flexible schedule—typically Monday through Friday (daytime)—but may require occasional evening or weekend shifts based on program needs.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on CDL training in truck cabs, on the driving range, and public roads.

  • Maintain student engagement through clear instruction, demonstrations, and written communication.

  • Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections accurately.

  • Monitor and record student performance and progress in a timely manner.

  • Adhere to Department of Transportation (DOT) and college safety regulations.

  • Assist with maintaining a clean, safe, and organized training environment.

  • Perform other instructional or administrative duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Reasonable Accommodation)

  • Frequent (34–66%) sitting, standing, talking, reaching, and climbing into semi-truck cabs or trailers.

  • Occasional (10–33%) kneeling, crouching, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motion.

  • Ability to travel over-the-road with students during training.

  • Exposure to outdoor conditions, including extreme heat or cold.

  • Potential exposure to noise, vibration, fumes, mechanical hazards, and chemicals.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must pass DOT long-form physical and drug screening.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional over-the-road (OTR) driving experience required (coast-to-coast preferred).

  • Possess a valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and maintain a clean driving record.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching, training, or educational experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
