Position Overview

Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) invites qualified and enthusiastic individuals to apply for the position of Adjunct Instructor for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Bus Driver Programs.

Under minimal supervision, the instructor will provide engaging, high-quality instruction in CDL and Bus Driver state-issued licensing programs. The role includes both classroom-based teaching and hands-on, practical training at multiple IWCC locations.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of commercial and bus driving operations, with the ability to teach, guide, and mentor students effectively. Prior teaching experience is highly desirable.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advocate for continual improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance program quality and student success.

  • Collaborate with mutual accountability, taking ownership of shared goals and responsibilities.

  • Champion exceptional service by fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

  • Lead through influence, demonstrating professionalism and integrity in all interactions.

  • Deliver CDL and/or Bus Driver instruction using college-approved syllabi, assessments, and grading practices.

  • Evaluate, record, and monitor student performance using IWCC’s learning management system.

  • Communicate effectively with IWCC faculty, staff, and students to ensure a positive educational experience.

  • Maintain compliance with all state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.


Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 21 years.

  • Valid Class A CDL license with a clean driving record.

  • At least two years of driving experience, including over-the-road (OTR) operations.

  • Strong working knowledge of diesel truck operations, air brakes, vehicle components, and inspection procedures.

  • Ability to demonstrate pre-trip inspection, backing, turning, shifting, and driving techniques.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to provide classroom, in-cab, and on-range instruction to trainees with diverse learning needs.

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Preferred:

  • Prior teaching or training experience in CDL or transportation-related programs.

  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and industry best practices for driver training.
