Position Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Old Dominion University’s Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology (FBCET) invites applications for a senior-level faculty position at the rank of Full Professor in Bioelectric Engineering. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be considered for an endowed appointment.

We are seeking dynamic individuals with expertise in bioelectrical engineering, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related disciplines. Candidates specializing in nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Priority will be given to applicants whose research bridges bioelectrics with one or more of the following areas:

  • Medical imaging and diagnostics

  • Drug/gene delivery

  • Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

  • Electrotherapy and neuromodulation

  • Neural interfaces and brain-computer interfaces

  • Cancer treatment

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in bioelectrics

Research outcomes are expected to create transformative therapeutic innovations that advance treatments for cancer, neurological disorders, and related health challenges.


Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop and sustain an externally funded research program in bioelectric engineering.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in electrical or biomedical engineering.

  • Mentor students and support academic and professional development.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams within ECE, FBCET, and ODU.

  • Participate in university service, including committees and academic initiatives.

The successful candidate will hold a core faculty affiliation with both the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health & Human Performance (EnMed) and the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics (FRRCBE), key hubs for biomedical and bioelectrical innovation at ODU.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, or a closely related field (by May 2025).

  • Eligibility for appointment as a Full Professor with tenure.

  • Proven research excellence, demonstrated through a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and externally funded projects.

  • Demonstrated experience in bioelectrics or bioengineering research.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active collaborations and the ability to leverage complementary research strengths across ODU.

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in teaching, research, and service.

  • Experience in mentoring graduate students and leading multidisciplinary research initiatives.
