Position Overview

Morgan State University seeks an accomplished, visionary, and inclusive leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). The ideal candidate will guide the department toward national prominence in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Smart Grids, Renewable Energy, Quantum Computing, 6G Wireless Systems, and Cybersecurity.

The department currently includes 16 faculty members, 371 undergraduate students, and 63 graduate students, making it the largest in the School of Engineering.

This is a 12-month, tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor, reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Engineering.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement the department’s strategic vision to support Morgan’s goal of achieving R-1 Carnegie Classification.

  • Promote innovation in curriculum and research in high-impact areas including AI, machine learning, renewable energy, advanced communications, and biomedical systems.

  • Foster cross-disciplinary and industry collaborations, developing partnerships that meet the needs of 21st-century employers.

  • Oversee undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring academic excellence and accreditation compliance.

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain diverse and high-achieving faculty and staff.

  • Manage departmental operations, budgets, and resource allocation.

  • Work with the Dean and university leadership to align policies and strategic priorities.

  • Drive fundraising and external engagement to enhance visibility and financial sustainability.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Experience:

    • Established record of excellence in teaching, research, and service, qualifying for appointment as a Full Professor.

    • Proven administrative and leadership experience in academia, research, or professional organizations.

    • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and build collaborative partnerships across disciplines.

    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

    • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and research.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following credentials are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Proven success in fundraising and securing external research funding from government, private, or industrial sources.

  • Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary research and program development.

  • A history of progressive administrative leadership in higher education or related settings.

  • Experience fostering entrepreneurship and innovation within academic programs.
