East Carolina University (ECU) invites applications for a full-time Principal Faculty – Medical Director position in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. The 27-month master-level PA program is ARC-PA accredited and housed in a state-of-the-art facility on ECU’s Health Science campus. ECU is a major educational and medical hub in Eastern North Carolina and is closely affiliated with ECU Health, Brody School of Medicine, College of Nursing, Laupus Medical Library, and the East Carolina Heart Institute.
Position Overview
This 1.0 FTE role is divided between:

0.8 FTE Principal Faculty: Teaching, curriculum development, student assessment, mentoring, and program administration.

0.2 FTE Medical Director: Ensuring clinical instruction and supervised practice experiences meet current PA standards and accreditation requirements.
The Principal Faculty–Medical Director provides leadership in curriculum planning, assessment, accreditation compliance, and program development while promoting the PA profession within ECU Health and the wider community.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Director Duties

Provide evidence-based guidance for all clinically related program components.

Assist with curriculum review, development, and improvement.
-
Participate in program evaluation and accreditation activities.
-
Support clinical site development and monitoring.
-
Advocate for the PA profession within ECU Health and the community.

Ensure students achieve program Student Learning Outcomes and competencies.
Principal Faculty Duties
-
Teach using lectures, case-based learning, simulation, and lab sessions.
-
Evaluate student performance through exams, OSCEs, projects, and clinical skills assessments.
-
Assist in curriculum design and administrative coordination of program phases.
-
Participate in Student Progress Committees, orientation, white coat ceremonies, and faculty development.

Recruit and evaluate clinical preceptors, attend faculty and curriculum meetings, and provide remedial instruction as needed.

Represent the department in institutional and community activities.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Licensed Physician Assistant (NCCPA) or Physician (MD/DO) with current or previous board certification.

Completion of an ARC-PA-accredited PA program or LCME-accredited medical school.

7–10 years of clinical experience.

Strong foundational medical knowledge and clinical expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience working with ECU and/or Brody School of Medicine.

Academic and clinical teaching experience.
-
Strong administrative and leadership experience.

Doctoral degree (MD/PhD or Clinical Doctorate).

Knowledge of current PA practice standards.
