Position Overview

The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and research-active Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Director to lead its NAACLS-accredited MLS program. This full-time, nine-month tenure-track position is available at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank (commensurate with experience).

The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for the MLS program, uphold accreditation standards, advance academic excellence, and maintain a robust research agenda aligned with departmental strengths in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and nutritional sciences. The Program Director will mentor faculty and students, support workforce development, and build partnerships across clinical laboratories, healthcare systems, and biotech organizations.


Key Responsibilities

Research & Scholarship

  • Maintain an active, externally funded research program in areas such as:

    • Clinical diagnostics and biomarker development

    • Infectious disease diagnostics

    • Hematologic and immunologic disorders

    • Molecular pathology

    • Clinical toxicology

    • Emerging diagnostic technologies

  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present at national/international conferences.

  • Collaborate with clinical partners, biotechnology industry, and interdisciplinary research teams within and outside the university.


Program Leadership & Administration

  • Provide visionary leadership for the NAACLS-accredited MLS program to ensure continuous accreditation and compliance.

  • Lead curriculum development, assessment, and review to align with current professional standards and emerging diagnostic technologies.

  • Support student recruitment, retention, and professional development while fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.


Teaching & Student Mentoring

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Applied Biomedical Sciences, with emphasis on Medical Laboratory Science.

  • Standard teaching load is 2 courses per semester, with additional reductions available—especially for Assistant Professors.

  • Advise MLS students, support certification exam preparation, and mentor undergraduate/graduate research projects.


About the Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences (BNS)

BNS includes 18 full-time faculty, 5 full-time staff, postdoctoral fellows, and research personnel. Faculty engage students through:

  • Interprofessional and experiential education

  • Hands-on laboratory training

  • Research mentorship

The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Nutrition, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Faculty may mentor PhD students via programs in:

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

  • Earned doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, or equivalent) in a biomedical science discipline related to Medical Laboratory Science

  • Current MLS(ASCP)CM certification

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

  • Evidence of teaching excellence

  • Research productivity with clear potential for external funding (or an established funding record)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong scholarly achievements and interdisciplinary collaboration

  • Leadership and teaching experience within an accredited MLS program

  • Knowledge of evidence-based education, program administration, and NAACLS accreditation processes

  • Experience mentoring students from diverse academic and personal backgrounds

  • Established clinical or industry partnerships that support translational research

  • Experience with interprofessional education

  • Active involvement in national professional organizations (required for Associate/Full Professor candidates)


Rank-Specific Considerations

  • Assistant Professor: Demonstrated emerging research program and well-defined trajectory

  • Associate Professor: Credentials consistent with tenure; strong scholarly record; recent/current external funding

  • Full Professor: Tenured with sustained, high-impact scholarship and ongoing extramural funding


Salary Information

Salary varies by rank and qualifications:

  • Assistant Professor: $75,000 – $115,000

  • Associate Professor: $85,000 – $155,000

  • Full Professor: $100,000 – $230,000

This is a full-time, benefited Massachusetts Society of Professors/MTA/NEA union position.
